Steam Boat Dinner with NSS students

I considered it an honor to be invited by my final year NSS students to have a dinner together.  All I was asked to do was to wish them well and toast with them with “Huat Ah”!  Thirteen of us including Kim Heng, ex-NSS student, bonded over a steam boat dinner near Bugis Junction on 26th Feb 2010.  The steam boat business seemed to be dominated by mainland Chinese; I saw them everywhere I turned.
I liked Raymond’s recommendation of the soup – one side Laksa and the half herbal chicken soup.  I have a weakness for Laksa but it can be too spicy for my throat at times so I avoid it during term time.  That evening was the last day of the exam so I could have as much Laksa as I desired.
Our conversations focused mainly on army experiences as this is the next phase of their lives.  I like one of the stories shared by Zhi Jie:  In the army, we practice throwing live grenades.  The drill involved pulling out the safety pin and hurling it while shouting “grenade”.  But for this generation of army boys who grew up with Pokemon, the cry became “Pikachu, I choose you!”
